Vintage Singer Sewing Machine
Last year I was lucky enough to be given this beautiful vintage Singer sewing machine, however after a few small projects it's giving off a horrible burning smell so now I'm planning to replace it with a newer model.
I've been doing some research over this last week and with a Budget of around £250 I know I'm at the bottom end of the scale and they definitely don't make them as stylish as this anymore so I'm wondering if I'd be better off getting it reconditioned.
Any comments would be welcome as I'm more than a little out of my depth when it comes to sewing. I'd also welcome recommendtions of Modern Sewing Machines within my price range.

she's beautiful, Dee. I would certainly try and see if you can get her reconditioned. They certainly don't make them like that anymore. Did you know they are doing a special anniversary one that's about £250 altho it's only available in US at the mo...but if you happen to know anyone there...

Absolutely gorgeous. My Gran's had a singer for many decades and it's never gone wrong, she only bought a modern machine because the singer became too heavy to lift. I'm no help with reconditioning but I'm sure it can be done, somewhere!

Dee I have a very similar machine only the coverplate is a darker blue rather than silver. I've found mine so reliable, I'd say it's got to be worth reconditioning. When I was making a quilt I was sewing A LOT and it went a bit bonkers - suddenly stitching really fast even though I'd taken my foot off the pedal! It belched a small puff of black smoke, I yanked the plug out of the wall and left it for an hour, plugged it in and worked again like magic. I'd stick with her, maybe temperamental, but bloomin' tough! :-)

I have a feeling you're somewhere in the Peak District? There's a shop in Woodseats, Sheffield which does servicing etc. A friend takes her machines there. Probably worth an enquiry before splashing out on something new?

Thanks for the comments, after watching a you tube tutorial about this machine I have realised there are quite a few components missing so I'm afraid I may be replacing rather than reconditioning. :(
